Hi! Big Small Home is run by me, Bill, to teach you all there is to know about creating the perfect small home for life.

But why would you ever want a small house?

I’m glad you asked. Small homes offer numerous benefits...

More Affordable

Small homes are more affordable to build simply because they require less materials and have a reduced construction time, which further helps to save on cost.

More Sustainable

Smaller homes have a reduced footprint, giving more room back to gardens and nature. They also tend to have lower embodied energy ratings due to reduced material requirements.

They Fight Clutter

Smaller homes force us to consider the items we own and our reasons for owning them. Our personal belongings tend to fill up the spaces we inhabit, however small homes encourage us to buy less stuff, and focus more on living.

Lower Operational Costs

It is much cheaper to heat or cool a small house than a large house, especially one that is well-designed and responds to site conditions and climates.

Promote Good Design

Limitations on space challenge our creativity and promote innovation. As a result, small homes are designed to be more versatile and provide for all of life’s requirements.

Boost Social Interaction

While a well-designed small home provides areas for quiet retreat, they also naturally promote social interaction between family members or housemates.

Encourage Outdoor Activity

Homes are supposed to provide us a shelter from outside, not become a substitute for it. Small homes compel us to venture outside and meet new people as well as see and experience new things.

Easier to Maintain

Not only are smaller homes cheaper and easier to maintain and repair (with less to go wrong), but you will also spend significantly less time cleaning them. This may be the best reason of all!

Big Small Home is here to act as a resource and guide about all there is to know to create and design the best small home.

Whether you’re building from scratch, renovating an existing house or apartment, or just looking to make the most of the space you currently have, Big Small Home is here to provide you with tons of useful information that will enable you to make the most out of small spaces.

So what is a small home? This is how I see it:

A small home is a house which occupies the smallest comfortable amount of internal and external space, while simultaneously accounting for your present and future requirements. A small home does not compromise on living standards. Instead, small homes enhance general well being through clever design, efficient use of space, and encourage us to look outwards, focusing less on material possessions.

What isn’t Big Small Home?

Big Small Home is not a blog about tiny homes. While the tiny house movement is a fantastic thing, particularly for people looking to break into the housing market, it doesn’t provide a long-term solution to the majority of people. Tiny homes also often require dramatic lifestyle changes, whereas the lifestyle changes required from small home living are much more subtle.

Having said this, there will be articles and topics posted which will be useful for people that live in tiny homes and apartments.

A small home for life does not cause you to become frustrated with a lack of space. It provides ample room for the things in your life that are most important to you or your family.

In other words, a well-designed small home is a Big Small Home. It contains only that which is necessary to support your lifestyle and living requirements without compromise. They allow you to focus on the things most important to you.

Unfortunately, many perceive small homes to be a second-best alternative, or temporary living arrangement. I am here to debunk that myth.

I personally live in a 56m² (600ft²) apartment as a family of three with my partner and daughter. If you’re interested, you can find out more about me and why I’m so passionate about this here.
